System Selection and Implemention – Cost of Ownership

HR Software

No business case for HR self-service is complete without analysing the outlay on the supporting IT systems. While much of the focus in IT implementations traditionally falls on the cost of the initial software licence, true cost of ownership spans the entire lifecycle of the product. It’s important that all stakeholders – including HR, finance and IT – are involved in this element of the business planning, since implementation invariably involves some trade-offs.

Self-service capability is typically purchased as an add-on to an existing HR system or during a fullblown HRMS replacement cycle. The cost of ownership equation will therefore vary. Assuming it’s implemented as part of a broader HRMS purchase, the true cost of ownership consists of a wide range of factors including:

- Licence fee and annual maintenance costs – In addition to the upfront costs, most applications carry a maintenance fee of up to 20+ per cent per year to cover ongoing product enhancements

- Implementation fees – The cost of installing a system and tailoring it to your specific work environment will be influenced by numerous factors, including:

- How much you choose to change the system. Most organisations adapt new IT systems to the way they work – how much it costs to do so will depend in part on the way the system was designed. In particular, it’s important to establish how much your needs can be met through configuration (e.g. changing fields and screens) rather than customisation, which involves changes to the underlying software code. Extensive customisation can be expensive and may complicate future upgrades

- How much integration is required to connect to other systems, both within HR and in other business functions

- Training – The cost of training is routinely underestimated in IT implementations. Worse, training is often the first item to be cut when budgets come under pressure – which is usually a false economy, given how significantly training influences user adoption. Where self-service systems offer access through a browser-style interface, the user training requirements will be significantly reduced

- Support – The cost of support provided by both IT and HR should be factored in throughout the implementation and beyond

Designing Your Flower Garden

Designing Your Flower Garden When it comes to the best way to make your outdoor space look its best, nothing compares to planting flowers. While this can be a daunting task, there is a way to make the design process much more enjoyable. When it comes to designing your flower garden, it is important to understand all of the options that are available to you. One way to have access to the widest selection is by visiting an online garden center. This way you will be able to choose the best flowers to fit both your landscaping needs and your personality.

When it comes to choosing flowers to compliment and enhance your landscaping, it is important to not only purchase plants that are visually appealing, but also that match your skill level. If you would like to try a challenge and choose plants that you have no experience growing, then you will need to do your research first. This is another area where an online gardening center will be a great deal of help. Here you will not only have all of the plants available, but you will have all of the information that you will need when it comes to the care and optimal growing conditions for each flower you choose.

An online gardening center will also have information about the tools and other supplies that you will need to ensure that you have one of the best looking outdoor spaces in your area. When you have decided on which plants you will use, it is time to purchase your selections. This can be done in two ways; the first is you can drive from gardening center to gardening center looking for the plants that you discovered online, which can be frustrating and wastes gas; or you can simply purchase your selections from the website where you conducted your research.

If you purchase your summer flower bulbs selections online, you will have the convenience of having all of your purchases delivered directly to your door, and the option to take advantage of the discounts and other incentives that a more traditional gardening center will not be able to provide. There are many other advantages when it comes to ordering your selections online; however, the convenience and potential of deep discounts are the most visible. Once your flowers arrive at your door, the last step is to plant your garden.

When using an online gardening center, you will literally have the world at your fingertips. You will have access to many plants and supplies that you may not be able to find at your local gardening centers. This can be both a blessing and a curse when dealing with exotic plants. It is important to ensure that all of the plants that you choose are able to survive in your climate. This is where the vast amount of information that is available will be the most valuable. There are few other places that you will find everything you need and all of the information at your fingertips that you will require in one place, except for an online gardening center.

Setting Up Broadband

Setting up Broadband

If you have just moved in to a new place, then you probably want to get set up with broadband as quickly as possible, especially if you had it at your last place.  Particularly if you had a bundled package in your last home, you will probably be very keen to get this set up again so that you can start watching cable TV and talk to your friends and check your email as soon as possible.  Quick broadband access makes moving a lot more manageable.

When setting up broadband at your new home, it will be very tempting to not bother looking around at what is available from the various service providers and to just go back to whoever you were with before.  This certainly has its advantages, as the service provider will already have all your billing details and will just move your service to your new home.  You might even be able to schedule an appointment for them to do this before you move and they can be there within a couple of days of your move so that you are all set up by the end of the first week.

However, there are advantages to be had from looking around.  Firstly, you get to compare your service provider’s current service to other providers’ current services.  If you are with Virgin broadband now, that may be because you just thought, oh, I’ll go with Virgin, when you first thought of getting broadband.  On the other hand, you might have done the proper research and determined that Virgin broadband was the right fit for you.  But that was then, what about now?  BT broadband might be a much better fit now.  They may have added new services, they may be able to offer a faster connection in your area and they might be able to offer you mobile broadband or fiber optic broadband where Virgin broadband might not.  You have no way of knowing until you look around and see who is offering what.

This is why it is very important to compare broadband when you are looking at the various broadband deals available.  When you compare broadband, you will also get a good idea of what you want and need so that you will be better able to tell if Virgin broadband is better for you than BT broadband, or if another company beats both of them.  Broadband deals can vary hugely or end up more or less the same, at which point you can let personal preference into the mix.  If there is no difference between three companies and you simply have more confidence in one of them, go for that one.  It is good to have confidence in your service provider as long as it doesn’t end up costing you more, both in money and in inadequate service.  Compare the various deals available and by the end of it, you will probably have a good idea of who you should trust anyway.  Setting up Broadband when you move doesn’t have to be complicated.

Why choose to be a fashion designer?

Dressmaking course

ITS Tutorial School provides fashion and dressmaking courses as well as a wide range of other support services for the Hong Kong community.

Fashion design is a form of art and one that is often associated with the most glamorous of people and world locations – Paris, Milan, New York. Students commonly rush to fashion design courses with their hopes and aspirations firmly fixed on mixing with the rich and famous and possibly one day being one of the jet set. But while this can be a reality, as with so many industries, only a few of the very talented and/or lucky ones ever make it to these giddy heights. For most the reality is far more mundane. And even for those who do reach the top, it is not an easy path and the work of a fashion designer is far harder than many people realise.

Depending on the size of the company and amount of experience, the fashion designer can be involved in any one, some, or all of the design process. The design process is the whole set of events that have to take place to get an idea into production. It begins with research into trends to identify the broad context in which the collection will be presented. Fabric must be chosen, sketching completed, designing produced, patterns drawn and cut. Draping may be required. Then there is the cutting and the initial construction.

Fittings and alterations will have to be done followed by notions and trims. Now a sample is ready. From this grading can be done to produce the same piece in different sizes. Finally the garment can go to production.

What many students don’t realise is that knowing as much of this process as possible will make them a better designer, especially the construction phase. Many students have fanciful ideas of simply sketching out amazing creations for others to make. But without a good knowledge of patternmaking and sewing techniques, the designer is very limited in what designs they can come up with that can actually be produced.

The first thing any aspiring fashion designer should do is learn to sew. Courses in Dressmaking and Sewing are now being offered at ITS Tutorial School in Hong Kong.

What is 75 Ball Bingo?

75 Ball Bingo

When it comes to the different types of games available to play online or in your local bingo hall, it is important to understand any new game that you want to play. Knowing and understanding all of the rules and objectives of any game will greatly increase the odds of being successful. It will at the very least help extend your length of play. The same is true when it comes to 75-ball bingo. This version of bingo is widely popular in the United States and Canada, and is slowly gaining acceptance in Britain.

The concept of the game is very similar to the more traditional bingo games. Like any new version, there are some differences that can be frustrating for anyone who is new to the game. That is why it is important to understand all of the rules associated with the game. This game uses a card with 25 slots of numbers ranging from 1 to 75. This is where the game gets its name. The concept of this game is to make a pattern that matches the one that is displayed. This pattern is usually preselected and can vary from room to room and from website to website. There is no limit to the different patterns that can be made from shapes, letters and abstract designs. The possibilities are truly endless.

When it comes to the different shapes that are most commonly seen in both online and traditional bingo halls, the most popular is matching the four corners of the card. This pattern can be one of the most difficult, because you are looking for only four specific numbers per card. Another common design is one that covers the entire card. This also is difficult to match, but the challenge is what is making this game rise in popularity.

Since this game is slightly different than the traditional game of 90-ball bingo, the novelty is helping it gain popularity in and around Britain. While it is slightly more difficult to match specific patterns, it is a much faster game than the more traditional styles. This game is played in only one round, unlike 90-ball bingo which is played in three. This translates into more games during a single session of bingo. The concept is very simple; the first person who matches the pattern that is posted wins the game and collects the cash prize.

Depending on the whether you are playing in a traditional bingo hall or online, the cash prizes can vary greatly. The pots can be as low as a few dollars or as high as thousands depending on the price of the cards and whether or not you are playing a progressive jackpot. While this game is relatively new in Britain, it has been played for years in the United States and Canada. The challenging aspect that is involved has seemed to aide this version in its popularity, along with the shear novelty of a new challenge. This is one variation of the game that is worth looking into, and who knows, it might be a game that becomes a new staple in the more traditional gaming halls as well.

Invisalign Straight Teeth

Getting a straight smile is a classic goal in the realm of dentistry and orthodontics, but when most people thing about braces, they imagine the gleaming metal of traditional applications, sometimes perked up with colored rubber bands or other accoutrements Though children often aren’t especially pleased by the prospect of having to wear such devices in an effort to achieve straighter smiles for the future, adults sometimes outright refuse to get braces because of apprehensions about how they’ll look. While it’s certainly a wise investment to spend a bit of time with the teeth in repair in order to enjoy a more beautiful smile afterward, making this sacrifice is traditionally quite difficult. As a result, the search for a solution that doesn’t interfere with the aesthetics of the present has been in full swing for a while. The most promising result of this quest so far has been the development of Invisalign braces, which, as the name suggests, are completely clear, making their application free from embarrassment or concern over appearance.

Invisalign braces require a special creation process before use, and qualified professionals like the team at Jollyville Dental of Austin Tx are able to ensure that the equipment is perfectly personalized and functional –even after the braces are crafted. Initially, a professional working with Invisalign braces will create a special mold from an individual client’s teeth, in much the same way as personal whitening trays are molded. After this process, the braces themselves will be created, and clients can return for a fitting. It is then necessary to make sure that the braces sit correctly on the teeth, and that the intended movements and shifts will take place.

A unique feature of these special invisible braces is that they can be re-cast as many times as is necessary to work towards the ideal smile. Returning to the dentist’s office for regular progress check-ups and to receive new braces, if necessary, is a regular part of the Invisalign process. Clients are likely to find that while clear braces can cost a little more, the benefits are considerable. Being able to maintain confidence about appearance while improving it is a fairly novel concept, but is achievable through the use of these remarkable braces. While Invisalign equipment can help a wide variety of people with different types of bites and misalignments achieve a better grin, those with serious abnormalities or structural problems may not be able to achieve desired results through this method.

When Invisalign braces are approved by a qualified dentist or orthodontist, clients can relax in the knowledge that getting a straighter smile doesn’t have to mean going through the traditionally nerve-wracking process of showing regular braces to family and friends. If you’re intent on obtaining a more radiant, even smile, visit your Austin Invisalign headquarters at Jollyville Dental or find a professional Invisalign dentist in your area to discover how simple and discreet straightening can be.

The Many Functions of a Boardwalk

The Many Functions of a Boardwalk
For most people, a boardwalk is little more than a place to take a stroll.  While this is the main function of the boardwalk, it is not the only one and that may come as a surprise to some individuals. Whether it is a raised boardwalk or elevated walkway really does not make a difference when considering the many other uses that these simple features have inherited over the years. Some wetland walkways and boardwalks extend into custom docks and piers, while others will showcase many shops and restaurants along its length. There are so many different functions of a boardwalk today that it can hardly be called a simple outdoor walkway.

In reality, a boardwalk is a walkway that allows visitors ease of movement from one waterfront area to another. There has been a long standing tradition that many businesses can be found flanking one side of the boardwalk while the other side looks out towards the water. This can mean a large influx of clientele during the warmer months, and sometimes extending into the fall. No matter where the boardwalk is located, it has the duel function of being a path for pedestrians and a homing beacon for shops, bars and restaurants that make it very convenient for customers to patronize.

A true boardwalk is usually maintained either by a city or buy a commercial business, depending on the location and the size. In the case of a boardwalk that most people would recognize, the boardwalk is the property of the city that it is located in, but there are some that are the property of the business that it surrounds. There are many larger waterfront hotels and bed-n-breakfasts that have their own boardwalk. This type of feature is usually added to bring a little romance to their visitor’s stay.

Today, as in the past, a raised boardwalk holds many functions, but it is the legendary romance that it creates in most individuals that keeps this type of feature popular for both cities and larger establishments. It is known to create a certain atmosphere that seems to have a universal appeal and this trend does not seem to be fading any time in the near future. While it is important to realize that an actual boardwalk is nothing more than a outdoor walkway for pedestrians, the culture that arises around it makes it a truly unique feature for any town.

When it comes to the many reasons for building a boardwalk, they are usually centered on the amount of traffic that a boardwalk generates. The simple pleasure of taking a stroll along the water line is enough to attract people from all walks of life. A boardwalk is not only used as a place for pedestrians to take a stroll, but many businesses depend on the crowds that it generates to increase sales and keep a fresh and ever changing customer base. The types of shops that can be found along a boardwalk are usually boutiques with unique items that cannot be found anywhere else. This is what has kept the romance and the excitement about taking a stroll on the boardwalk alive.

Adding a New Twist to an Old Business

Adding a New Twist to an Old Business

The cultivation of the grape and the fermenting of wine go back thousands of years into human history. There are many European vineyards that can trace the origin of their family business back across the centuries for many, many generations, with each new generation learning the techniques and secrets of their ancestors while searching for incremental improvements to add their own stamp to future vintages.

Changes can take many forms, whether it’s introducing a new grape to family plots, expanding existing vineyards for higher capacity, bringing modern technology into the process, developing a new blend, or even just finding new markets for the existing products.

One of the more controversial of the changes that are occurring in the wine industry today is the use of, and experimentation with different materials for sealing the wine bottle. The vast majority of traditionalists say that there is absolutely no substitute for natural cork. The cork allows just the right amount of breathing to occur between the wine and the outside air. It also provides a satisfying tactile experience upon opening the bottle. From the smell of the cork after the bottle is opened, experienced wine drinkers can tell immediately if a wine has spoiled while in the bottle.

With the vast quantities of wine being produced and sold around the world today, however, cork supplies are not always so easy to come by. This has led to a variety of other options being tried. We are all familiar with the screw top cap, and most associate this with very cheap wines. The main problem with a metal screw cap on a wine bottle is that is seals too well. There is no gas exchange at all between the inside and the outside of the sealed bottle when an ordinary metal screw cap is used. For cheap wines that aren’t meant to sit around, that probably doesn’t matter. Flavored blends and four dollar grocery store wines are not going to develop any more character or improve with age no matter how perfectly the bottle is capped, so metal screw tops are fine for them.

Richer, more complex wines, on the other hand, do develop over time, and the very minute amount of pressure regulation and gas exchange allowed by a porous cork are instrumental in regulating that aging for the best effect. Yet, scientifically, it is possible to determine exactly what is happening in terms of the cork. Fine instruments can measure literally molecule by molecule any gases passes through the cork. Once this data is in hand, it is possible to recreate “corks” from artificial materials that have identical or nearly identical properties.

Some wine-makers are already using a plastic cork synthesized to mimic the properties of real cork materials. These plastic corks can even be removed with any conventional corkscrew just like a real cork. With the added advantage of a greater cohesive strength to prevent the new cork from fragmenting as can occasionally happen with real corks.

As the amount of wine being consumed continues to grow, suitable substitutes for natural cork will need to be adopted by more and more of the old vintners. Those using scientific principles to ensure that their new materials behave the way they intend will have the advantage.

Top 7 Reasons Why You Should Buy Electronic Cigarettes

If you are a smoker and haven’t heard about electronic cigarettes, it’s time to do some research and learn about this great alternative to your traditional nicotine fix.  Electronic cigarettes employ some groundbreaking technology that has numerous benefits, from being environmentally friendly to being cheaper for your pocket book.  Before you light up again, you should take a look at these top seven reasons why you should buy electronic cigarettes.

First, electric cigarette reviews prove that people love this new technology.  Closet smokers no longer have to worry about the lingering smell of cigarette smoke.  When a smoker’s partner hates the habit, they can kiss without telling!  There is no lingering after taste to give away the secret.  People get the same nicotine fix without the evidence and smokers are raving about the many advantage of using this new alternative.

Second, you can smoke anywhere, anytime.  Smoking bans only prohibit smoking traditional cigarettes.  Because electronic cigarettes don’t emit harmful second hand smoke, you can get your fix in restaurants, air ports or busy subways.  No one will even notice that you are smoking unless you are sitting right next to them.

Third, you will save a lot of money when you buy electronic cigarettes such as Smoking Everywhere and Blu Electronic Cigarettes.  They are much cheaper than traditional cigarettes, and last longer.  You won’t have to buy a new lighter when you lose yours or run out of lighter fluid.  In fact, you won’t need a lighter at all!  Because there is no flame, no ash and no fire involved, no lighter is necessary.

Fourth, you will help the environment.  There are never any cigarette butts to throw out the car window with electric cigarettes.  You won’t be putting harmful fumes in the air.  You won’t have to worry about dumping out an ash tray anymore.  The earth will thank you for making the switch!

Fifth, this alternative is actually better for your health!  Nicotine is highly addictive and smoking is a hard habit to kick.  By making the switch, you will at least eliminate the harmful tar and carbon monoxide of traditional cigarettes.  This small change can make a big difference in your long term health.

Sixth, you won’t be able to tell the difference after you make the change.  You will inhale this cigarette just as you always have.  Consumers have stated that these cigarettes actually provide a smoother smoking experience.  You get the same taste and the same soothing effects without the harmful tar or tobacco.

Seventh, you can feel better about spending time with your family.  You won’t have to spend precious family time going outside to smoke.  You can smoke around your family with electric cigarettes with no guilt and no fear for their health.  There is no second hand smoke so you won’t harm your children when you smoke with them in the car.

You can conveniently order cigarettes online when you make the switch.  There is no more going out to the store in the middle of the night when you really need a nicotine fix.  You can just order your supply once a month or as often as you wish.  Then you won’t have to worry about making a trip out when you need to smoke.  Don’t continue throwing away your valuable money on a habit that won’t quit.  Instead, do yourself a favor and make the switch!  You’ll save money, help the earth, and make important strides to a longer, healthier life.

Taking the Hassle Out of Relocation

Companies today are trying to find creative ways to keep their best talent on one hand while trying to reduce bottom-line expenses on the other. The current dismal economic climate has made this juggling act even more difficult but infinitely more important for companies who wish to come through the recession relatively unscathed.

Businesses that have multiple locations have an advantage. They can move employees not only within the office but to other offices in the company. This way, the company can ensure that the right staff levels are achieved at each one of its offices and that quality staff remain employed.

Finding yourself relocating for your job can be both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing in that you still have a job. Another benefit is that you will be able to obtain varied experience at your new location and improve your skills. Living in a new city can be exciting and can be a welcome change for both you and your family.

However, relocating is often filled with headaches and stresses on top of changing positions. Dealing with the sale or rental of your old home, finding a new house in your new city that fits your family’s budget and lifestyle, and the thousand little things that need to be signed up for, organized, or taken care of can all cause you to rethink whether it is worth it or not.

Changing housing is one of the most challenging issues you will have to deal with. You likely have a firm start date at your new job and that often won’t sync up with your real estate changes. Finding a new home takes time and effort and likely will not happen at the same time you sell your existing home. One alternative is to book a hotel room in your new city until you are able to find a house that works for you. There are many downsides of hotel rooms, however. The first is the cost. Hotel rooms are often no cheaper for extended stays as they are for a single night. The cost can add up, especially when you add meals on top of that as you do not have access to cooking facilities. Hotel rooms are also restrictive and there is not much room to spread out and relax, especially if the whole family is there.

One way to take the hassle out of relocating is to book extended stay housing in your new location until you find the perfect house. Wynne Residential Corporate Housing (www.wynneresidential.com) specializes in short and long term housing for all situations, including relocation. Wynne housing is a far superior solution to a hotel room. The properties are fully furnished apartments and include kitchen facilities, a laundry area, and everything else you would need to be able to feel like you’re at home.

Wynne also makes it easy on you by taking care of all of the extraneous bills that go along with moving. They co-ordinate all utilities including reading meters and final billings. Wynne presents you with a single bill so that you do not have to worry about any of the details.

Relocating is stressful enough. Knowing that you have a comfortable apartment to come home to each evening will give you peace of mind and will let you focus on your new job.

Draw Traffic to Your Business

When you attend a trade show, your primary concern is bringing in new business by meeting people who are obviously interested in what you have to offer, since they have come to a show about your field. Some of these contacts will bring you immediate sales, some will bring you sales further down the line and some will never directly buy anything from you, but may mention you to others and bring you business indirectly.

Either way, going to a trade show can have an enormous benefit for your company’s success. Another enormous, often underrated benefit of attending a trade show is that not only do you gain new clients, but you make extremely important contacts in your business field and gain new partners whose offerings enhance your own. Therefore it is extremely important to maintain a professional appearance at all times, not just for prospective clients, but also for prospective business partners.

Nearly every business can benefit from working in complementary partnership with other businesses. Being able to recommend another service and save your client the trouble of looking themselves enhances your reputation in their eyes. It gives the impression that you are well informed about your field and that you have their best interests at heart by recommending other companies to them. In turn, partner companies recommend you to their clients. A good complementary professional partnership works both ways and is beneficial to both parties. However, it is necessary to get to know these other companies before you recommend them to anyone; otherwise the consequences could be very damaging to your standing with your client.

It is very important that while you meet prospective customers and find out how your company can service their needs, you go and have a look around the trade show yourself and meet the representatives of the other businesses in attendance. You will be able to meet others in your field, find out what they supply or what they do, get to know them personally and start building positive relationships with them. It is simply not possible to go to a trade show in your field and not find at least one business whose offerings complement what you offer your clients. Working with these other companies could really set you apart from the competition.

Your display and promotional materials are as important in gaining the interest of prospective business partners as they are in attracting the interest of potential clients. By presenting yourself in a professional manner, you can help to sell your business to clients and potential business alliances at the same time. There is a wide variety of promotional material you can use to enhance your image and make it easier to sell yourself to others at a trade show. Shop around to get a good idea of what is available before buying. It is imperative to present yourself professionally at these shows and the right trade show supplies will enable you to be the consummate professional at all times.

Dieting 101: the Bathroom Scale

Losing weight is something that many people struggle with. It is estimated that currently, 32% of adults in the United States are overweight. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimate that by 2015, 75% of U.S. adults will be overweight and 41% will be obese.

With alarming statistics like that, it is no wonder that losing weight can be a challenge for so many. There are thousands of diets and exercise programs on the market today, each claiming to have discovered the secret of quick and easy weight loss. But with more and more people becoming overweight all the time, it is clear that no one has found the magic bullet.

Regardless of which diet or exercise program you choose to help you drop the pounds, the one piece of equipment you need to keep you on track is a good digital bathroom scale. It is ultimately the bathroom scale that will tell you if your efforts are paying off or not. Once you start to lose weight, the bathroom scales will tell you how quickly you are losing and will warn you when weight loss starts to taper off.

When using bathroom scales to track your weight loss, keep the following in mind:

Buy good quality digital bathroom scales. There are many types and styles of bathroom scales out there, but digital scales are the most accurate. Scales based on springs and coils wear over time and become inaccurate. A digital scale will always give you a consistent read out. Some digital bathroom scales on the market today can assess more than your weight. They can read your body’s hydration levels and body fat percentages. These can give you more detailed information on how your weight loss efforts are progressing.

Always read the scales at the same time of day. The human body’s weight can swing significantly during the day based on food consumed, perspiration and a number of other natural factors. Weight can change by five pounds or more over the course of a day. Weigh yourself at approximately the same time every day to keep your readings consistent and comparable. It does not matter what time of day you pick as long as you’re consistent. Most people weigh the least first thing in the morning and gain weight throughout the day.

Do not read the scales every single day. When embarking on a new weight loss initiative, it can be tempting to jump on the scales every day to see signs of progress. But the human body doesn’t work like that and your weight loss can be erratic. There may be no change for several days and then a sudden drop of five pounds. Also during the first weeks of a new exercise program, it is common to gain weight as you are building muscle and muscle is heavier than fat. Replacing fat with lean muscle can make the scales look like they’re going in the wrong direction. This can be disheartening and unmotivational. However, if you keep your weigh-ins to once a week, you will miss most of these fluctuations and will start to see a more consistent weight loss.

It’s not your Speakers, It’s your Room

It’s not your Speakers, It’s your Room

If you’re looking for the perfect loudspeakers for your room, you can stop looking. The perfect loudspeaker system for your home, whether for stereo music or surround sound home theater applications, is impossible to design. That’s because any loudspeakers that are placed in your room will sound different than they did in the acoustic chambers or test rooms in which they were designed. While the speakers themselves may be perfectly fine and be well balanced, it’s your room that is the problem.

Room boundaries interact with sound waves that come from your loudspeakers and cause the sound you hear at almost any given point in the room to be changed. There are all sorts of distortions, frequency boosting, and cancellations going on in the typical room, almost as if you had an really amazing equalizer and then let a chimpanzee set the level for each band in a random position. As sound waves echo off the walls and alternately reinforce or cancel each other out, you are left with a poor reproduction of whatever came out of the speakers originally. What’s worse is that the balance is different in nearly every part of the room so that it can’t be fixed with an equalizer without making it worse in other parts of the room.

The good news is that the problem can actually be corrected, not by buying new loudspeakers, but by fixing your room. Don’t worry, fixing your room doesn’t involve a major remodeling effort, or even a minor remodeling. All you need to do is visit ReadyAcoustics.com and get a little expert advice and some acoustic treatment panels for your room. The panels come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit the needs of your room. They act by damping sound waves that pass through them to substantially reduce the late echoes that interfere with the clarity and spectral balance of the music you hear.

Acoustic panels are thin, just a couple of inches thick. They are made to be placed along the walls to damp the sound as it first strikes them and then again by reducing the remaining echoed sound wave as it passes back through the panel off the wall. Acoustic panels are generally made of a rigid, porous board material like the fiberglass matrix used in Owens Corning 705, that doesn’t provide a solid surface to either reflect the sound or allow it to pass through easily.

Other types of acoustic treatments are designed for corner locations or other problem spots within the room. For the floor surface, a good thick carpet works well to reduce echoes from that surface. Careful placement of the speakers is another way to help tune your room for the best possible sound.
