Micro-Blogging vs “Regular” Blogging

When web logs, or “blogs,” as they have come to be known, fist emerged o the internet media scene, they were largely confined to the domain of the private individual. Like diaries, blogs have traditionally been used to catalogue and organize thoughts, ideas, and even heated rants. But eventually, as people began to share their favorite online hangouts and funny links, and as more and more bloggers began writing online, creating a vast and gregarious network, the opportunity for incredible marketing power and income potential through blogs was born. Today, blogs are still kept and enjoyed by countless numbers of individual writers, but an increasing number of professionals are bringing their businesses to the fore through blogs. With a nod to the pace of the lightening-quick speed of modern technologies, blogging has further expanded into two distinct formats: “micro” blogging and “regular” blogging.
Micro blogging, while fairly new to the scene, has whipped up an incredible popularity since its inception. Thanks mostly to the major micro blogging venue Twitter, this format has gained remarkable momentum and is being used by everyone from web designers to search engine optimization specialists to internet marketers, in locales from Austin Texas to Kyoto Japan. Based on the idea that interesting and valuable ideas and thoughts ought to be able to fit into a 140 character limit, the micro blogging concept allows for multiple short bursts of information, whether it’s a passing observation, a link, or an ongoing conversation with other users.
While this format can be a lot of fun, and can certainly be a central player in a modern marketing or SEO campaign, it is not without its drawbacks. Micro blogging is naturally an unfit venue for products and services that require a lot of explanation or for companies who focus their message on well-worded, but long-winded copy, and reaching older demographics may not be very easy with this format. Still, with the ability to create a personal web design and collect a community of followers, this type of blogging is a favorite among many modern business owners.
Regular blogging makes no such length restriction on its adherents, allowing writers and marketers to sound off on a given topic for as long as they’d like. Of course, this means the content might not be all that readable for today’s somewhat shortened online attention span, but in some instances, saying it in just a few words just isn’t right. Regular blogging enjoys a versatile presence online, with a number of content management systems available for management, and scores of designers from Austin Tx to New York City vying to create the most attractive layouts and themes. A major disadvantage, however, with this blogging format is that the supporting network will have to be created from scratch, with visitors pointed to the site from elsewhere on the web.
Ultimately, there’s no reasonable verdict on the superiority of either blogging format. Depending on the needs of the owner, both offer great ways to get a brand and its message seen, heard, and loved.
